The Democratic Innovations Research Unit, Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, focuses on the fundamental transformations of contemporary democracy. Purely representative and elite-driven democracy is declining in favour of increasing citizens’ involvement in politics. The Democratic Innovations Research Unit conceptualizes and assesses current democratic challenges, examines empirically existing democratic innovations in comparative perspective and develops proposals for the future of democracy.
