The Faculty of Educational and Social Science at the University of Münster, Germany, is looking to fill the post of a

Professor in the Social Sciences
(salary level W3)
to study Islam in Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries

The post will be filled at the earliest possible date. The professorship will be based either in the Institute of Political Science or the Institute of Sociology.

Position overview
This position is intended to strengthen and promote interdisciplinary research on religion and politics at the University of Münster, which has been undertaken over the past 10 years within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures”.Therefore, we seek candidates with an excellent track record in empirical research on the state of Islam and on the social situation of Muslims in Europe and/or on the social and political treatment of Islam and Muslims in European societies.

For appointment to a professorship in the Institute of Political Science, the successful candidatemust be able to carry out research and teaching in general political science. Furthermore, the candidate is required to have specific research and teaching experience either in comparative political science or in gender relations and the political treatment of social diversity.

For appointment to a professorship in the Institute of Sociology, the successful candidatemust displayexpertise in the theories and methods of sociology. In addition, the candidateis required to have demonstrable competence in research and teaching in the areas of migration, integration, and religious and social diversity.

Qualifications and expertise
Regardless of the institute of appointment, the successful candidate is expected to have a track record ofhigh-level research contributions and relevant, including internationally notable, publications. It is assumed that the successful candidate has experience in securing research funding. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching programmes of the respective institute, as well as have research and teaching strengths compatible with those of the institute.

Prerequisites for appointment are a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, and a particular capacity for academic work, usually demonstrated by a doctorate of high quality. For appointment to the Institute of Political Science, this doctorate degree must be in political science;for appointment tothe Institute of Sociology, in sociology.

Moreover,the successful candidate is required to have additional relevant academic achievements,demonstrated within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral monograph, or activity as a researcher at a university or non-university institution, or as part of scholarly activity in the private sector, in administration, or in another social sectoreither in Germany or abroad.
