Whether you just have been offered a post-doc- or junior faculty  position or are  looking for a job: the first two years post-PhD can be demanding. Teaching new courses; trying to keep up with your research; working towards tenure or going from one temporary contract to another; meeting publication targets; facing competition; and juggling work and private life are just some of the issues young academics confront. ECPG-mentoring helps young scholars in this phase of their career in their professional development.

ECPG-mentoring programs run for two years: the first cohort will begin in September 2015 and complete the mentoring program in the spring of 2017. It will consist of up to 10 mentees. The ECPR Standing Group on Gender & Politics will pair mentors and successful applicants by 1 September. The mentee and mentor will jointly design and detail the content of the program in a work plan. Candidates meet with their mentor semiannually at ECPR conferences or through Skype to discuss career-related goals and strategies. The mentee prepares these meetings and brings in the topics for discussion.


  • No longer than 2 years post PhD at the moment of the call (16 April 2015).
  • If no PhD yet, then a set date for defending the PhD-thesis
  • Employed by – or conducting a PhD with – an ECPR member institution (for the current list see
  • Candidates that had career breaks – e.g. parental leave – may request an extension by sending an email to with ‘ECPG-mentoring 2015-2017’ in the subject line. Extension is only valid when requested and approved by the Standing Group before 16 May 2015.

Interested young scholars may send their applications before 16 May to with ‘ECPG mentoring 2015-2017’ in the subject line. Applications should consist of the following materials:

  • Copy of PhD-certificate or confirmation of PhD-supervisor that a date for the defense has been set;
  • 1 page CV including publications;
  • 1 page cover letter that lays out

o   career/professional development goals and how a mentor can assist in achieving these;

o   potential preferences concerning the gender and profile of a prospective mentor.

Applications that are received after the deadline, that are incomplete or do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be taken into consideration.
