Meet the new SG-SEP Steering Committee 2019-2022

Stavroula Chrona
King’s College London

I am a Teaching Fellow in European and International Studies at King’s College London. My research lies on the intersection of political science and psychology. I am interested in the exploration of the psychological underpinnings of political behaviour focusing in particular on the effect of ideological dispositions, value orientations and emotions on citizens’ political judgements and decision-making processes. My current work is focused on the underpinnings of citizens’ participatory behaviour in authoritarian contexts (such as Turkey) as well as in contexts where populism is on the rise such as Greece and Italy. In the past, I have served as an elected board member of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) Early Careers Scholars Committee and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Graduate Student Network. I am very excited about the opportunity to serve the community of scholars that work on Southern European Politics as a member of the Steering Committee. I look forward to working with the rest of the Committee members in order to expand the activities of the Standing Group with the aim to enrich the academic network of scholars that research the complex political dynamics of Southern Europe.

Bonnie Field

I am Professor and Chairperson of the Global Studies Department at Bentley University (in Waltham, Massachusetts, outside of Boston). I did my graduate work in political science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. My research interests centre on political parties and political institutions in transitional and institutionalized democracies. I have published on minority governments, interparty relations in parliament, processes of candidate selection and political appointments, and regime democratization. Much of my work examines Spain. I am a local Affiliate of the Center for European Studies at Harvard University and an affiliated researcher at the Observatory of Coalition Governments in Spain, University of Barcelona. I have been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for European Studies at Harvard, a visiting researcher at the Universities of Barcelona and Oslo, Faculty Fellow at the University of California, Irvine, Visiting Fellow at UCI’s Center for the Study of Democracy, and Fulbright Senior Researcher in Spain. I look forward to working to expand the Standing Group’s reach and activities with my Steering Committee colleagues.

Susannah Verney
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

I am currently Associate Professor of European Integration and European Politics in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at NKUA and Affiliate Researcher at the School of Political and Social Sciences, University of Glasgow. Born British, I have lived and worked in Greece for over three decades and become a Greek citizen. Before joining the University of Athens, I was privileged to work in the Office of the Greek Ombudsman, participating in the exciting process of building a new institution in Greece and gaining insights into the workings of Greek public administration. In 1996 I participated in the founding editorial team of South European Society and Politics, becoming Editor in 1999 (from 2008 co-Editor with Anna Bosco). Through the journal and the related Routledge book series, I have worked for more than two decades to promote scholarly research into Southern Europe. As Convenor 2007-19, I have been proud to see SG-SEP develop into one of the major ECPR Standing Groups. I have worked to ensure a space for Southern Europe within ECPR by co-convening Sections at ECPR General Conferences (seven to date). I am looking forward to sharing my ‘knowhow’ with the new Steering Committee members and working with them to expand the Group’s activities.
