Summer School of the ECPR Standing Group on the European Union: Understanding Crisis and Transformation in the EU
Trento, 18-29 May 2015
The notion of “crisis” has been central to the evolution of the European Union. In many accounts, crises are critical junctures that lead to important transformations in policies, politics and the polity itself. The aim of the summer school is to have students explore this dynamic of crisis and transformation with respect to the theoretical and conceptual tools that we have to understand integration as well as policy areas. The confluence of the economic crisis, events in the Ukraine (with its implications for energy policy) and climate change are just a few of the global challenges that may have created critical junctures not only for the EU but also for how we study it. Students will hone their understanding of the main approaches to integration, examining ways in which they have provided useful tools to explore how the EU has developed in the face of recent challenges. They will have an opportunity to present their own research projects in an attempt to provide a critical understanding of the role of crises for the EU and for approaches to integration.
The summer school is organised by the Jean Monnet Centre and the Department of Sociology at the University of Trento and SAIS Europe of the Johns Hopkins University. It will have guest lecturers present research in the morning on a topic related to the theme of understanding crisis and transformation, with afternoons dedicated to the presentation of students’ research project in a seminar format. Students attending the summer school will receive 6 ECTS credits and is open to PhD students.
