SGIR endorsement policy

Dear SGIR members,

Thank you very much again to all of you who joined us at our Business Meeting in Wrocław, and for all your comments and thoughts on SGIR’s endorsement policy! You can find SGIR’s final endorsement policy below for the following events: 1. ECPR General Conference section proposals; 2. EISA’s Pan-European Conference on International Relations section proposals; 3. ECPR Joint Sessions workshop proposals.

ECPR General Conference section proposals

ECPR’s Standing Group on International Relations (SGIR) may endorse a section proposal for the ECPR annual General Conference. Each year, a minimum of 50% of the academic program of the General Conference will be made up by Standing Group endorsed sections and panels. An endorsement therefore increases a section proposal’s chances for success, even though it is not a guarantee that the proposal will be included in the final program.

A call for proposals will be distributed each year to SGIR’s membership via the standing group mailing list. SGIR’s Steering Committee will provide feedback on section proposals, including on how to strengthen proposals considered or selected for endorsement before the general submission deadline. To allow for such a feedback process, section proposals may be shared up to one month in advance of the general deadline. At the very latest, however, section proposals seeking endorsement should be submitted via email at least two business days before the general deadline for section proposals on 18 November in the year prior to the General Conference.

All section proposals seeking endorsement will be considered based on the following criteria:

  1. Innovative potential: Ability to attract innovative paper and panel submissions that advance current debates in International Relations (IR).
  2. Participation: The section proposal has the potential to attract a sufficient number of paper and panel proposals.
  3. Section chairs: The extent to which the workshop proposal benefits from the section chairs’ existing expertise and experience. In line with the ECPR Gender Equality Plan, SGIR seeks to nominate 50% female Section Chairs.
  4. A platform for IR research at the annual General Conference: The section endorsed by SGIR is intended to provide a platform for different strands within IR research at the ECPR General Conference. Section proposals that allow for submissions from a diverse set of theoretical and methodological approaches across the discipline will therefore be preferred.

SGIR’s Steering Committee may propose a section open to IR research in general should no section proposals that sufficiently meet the outlined criteria be submitted. In particular, such an open IR section will be proposed should no section proposal with a sufficiently broad theme be submitted for endorsement.

EISA’s Pan-European Conference on International Relations section proposals

ECPR’s Standing Group on International Relations (SGIR) may endorse one section proposal for the EISA’s Pan-European Conference on International Relations. Endorsement by SGIR will lead to preferable consideration, even though it is not a guarantee that the proposed section will be included in the final program.

At the very latest, however, section proposals should be submitted via email at least two business days before the general deadline for section proposals on 20 November in the year prior to EISA’s Pan-European Conference.

In addition to EISA’s general guidelines on section proposals, all section proposals seeking endorsement by SGIR will be considered based on the following criteria:

  1. Innovative potential: The section proposal convincingly outlines how the proposed section would advance current debates in International Relations (IR).
  2. Participation: The section proposal has the potential to attract a sufficient number of paper and panel proposals (either 5 or 10 panels).
  3. Section Chairs: The extent to which the workshop proposal benefits from the section chairs’ existing expertise and experience. In line with the ECPR Gender Equality Plan, SGIR seeks to nominate 50% female Section Chairs.

SGIR’s Steering Committee may decide not to endorse any proposals should no section proposals that sufficiently meet the outlined criteria be submitted.

ECPR Joint Sessions workshop proposals

ECPR’s Standing Group on International Relations (SGIR) may endorse a workshop proposal submitted for the ECPR Joint Sessions of Workshops. Proposals endorsed by a Standing Group will be given preference by the Academic Conveners when deciding between two proposals of equal quality.

A call for proposals will be distributed each year to SGIR’s membership via the standing group mailing list. SGIR’s Steering Committee will provide feedback on workshop proposals, including on how to strengthen proposals considered or selected for endorsement before the general submission deadline. To allow for such a feedback process, workshop proposals may be shared up to one month in advance of the general deadline. At the very latest, however, workshop proposals should be submitted via email at least two business days before the general deadline for section proposals on 4 February in the year prior to the Joint Sessions.

All workshop proposals seeking endorsement will be considered based on the following criteria:

  1. Innovative potential: The workshop proposal convincingly outlines how the proposed workshop would advance current debates in International Relations (IR).
  2. Participation: The workshop proposal has the potential to attract a sufficient number of paper proposals.
  3. Workshop Chairs: The extent to which the workshop proposal benefits from the workshop chairs’ existing expertise and experience. In line with the ECPR Gender Equality Plan, SGIR seeks to nominate 50% female Workshop Chairs.

SGIR’s Steering Committee may decide not to endorse any proposals should no workshop proposals that sufficiently meet the outlined criteria be submitted.
