Migrants are often put in the spotlight for their alleged lack of loyalty to their host countries. They may be perceived as ‘fifth columnists’ serving foreign associations or countries, who threaten national security. From the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States to more recent events in Australia and France, including the mobility of foreign fighters who leave countries in the western world to fight in Syria, western public opinion has progressively come to identify migration with terrorism. This identification is hardly new, as it has existed from the modern age onwards. In its series ‘Biblioteca’ (Library), hosted by the scholarly review Archivio Storico dell’Emigrazione Italiana, the Italian publisher Sette Città is calling for papers for a special issue devoted to the topic “migration and terrorism”. The issue aims to have an interdisciplinary and long-term perspective.
Although there will be a special focus on Italian migrants outside of Italy or immigrants in Italy, editors will take into consideration abstracts for papers (in English or Italian) dealing with migrants of any nationality and in any country from the modern age onwards. Proposals on the following research areas (but not exclusively) are welcome:

– Migrants and imagined, attempted, realized terrorist attacks – Migrants, terrorism, figurative arts
– Migrants, terrorism, literature
– Migrants, terrorism, cinema
– Migrants, terrorism, television
– Migrants, terrorism, civil society
– Migrants, terrorism, war
Abstracts must not exceed 250 words and have to indicate academic affiliation and email. They must be sent to Matteo Sanfilippo (matteosanfilippo@unitus.it) and Matteo Pretelli (matteo.pretelli@tiscali.it) by 30 April 2015. All papers (max 5,000 words in length including footnotes) will be delivered to the editors by 31 October 2015.
