Roundtable debate ‘‘Towards a new parliament? EP after the 2014 elections’’, Atrium of the City Hall of The Hague, June 6th, 2014, SGEU Conference.
Participants: Christophe Crombez (Leuven University and Stanford University), Wim van de Camp (Member of the European Parliament, The Netherlands), Claes de Vreese (University of Amsterdam), and Bas Eickhout (Member of the European Parliament, The Netherlands). Event moderated by Euro-watcher Joop Hazenberg and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Municipality of The Hague, and the Representation of the European Commission in The Netherlands.

After the 2014 JCMS Annual Lecture of Luuk van Middelaar, moderated by Amy Verdun (University of Victoria); with Fabio Franchino (University of Milan) and local organizers and academic chairs Bernard Steunenberg, Antoaneta Dimitrova, Dimiter Toshkov (Leiden University).
PRESENTATIONS
Panels last for 1.5 hours. Depending on the number of papers to be presented within the panel, presentations should take between 10 and 15 minutes. There is no pre-specified format for the presentation. All lecture rooms will be equipped with computers with PowerPoint installed, USB drives, and access to the internet, and with projectors (beamers).
LOCATION
All conference sessions will take place in the building of Leiden University, Campus The Hague, located at Schouwburgstraat 2 in the center of the city of The Hague. For a route description, see here .
REGISTRATION
Registration will take place at the site of the conference (Schouwburgstraat 2, The Hague). Registration desks will be open on 4 June (Wednesday) from 16.00 until 20.00, and on 5 and 6 June from 8.00 until 17.00.
The round-table debate and reception on 6 June (Friday) will take place in the Atrium of the City Hall of The Hague .

The final academic program is expected to be completed before 15 April 2014. The program will include all accepted papers, the distribution of papers into panels and sections, and the chairs and the discussants for each panel.
You would be expected to send your complete paper to the panel chair, the discussant, and the panellists by 15 May 2014. Note that you might be assigned to function as a panel chair or discussant if you have agreed to that in the paper proposal form.

The ECPR Standing Group on the European Union calls for papers for its 7th biennial conference which will be hosted by Leiden University in the city of The Hague in the Netherlands, 5-7 June 2014.
The European Union is expecting another eventful year in 2014 with perhaps the most important European Parliament elections to date to be held in May 2014 in a climate of uncertain economic recovery, persistent decline of popular support for the Union, and unprecedented politicization of European integration in the national political arenas.
We invite papers and panels that discuss all aspects of European integration. We welcome new theoretical and empirical research that reflects on the ever-changing nature of the EU; the democratic legitimacy of the integration process; the evolution, functioning and effects of EU policies and institutions; the role of the EU in the broader world, and so on. The full list of conference sections is available below.
The conference will provide space for researchers from various backgrounds – Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, Political Economy, History, Sociology, etc. – to present and discuss cutting-edge research focused on the pressing questions of European integration. We are committed to methodological pluralism, scientific quality, and societal relevance and we encourage dialogue across academic disciplines.
Please submit your proposals for papers and panels between 30 September and 1 December 2013. The review of submitted proposals will be finalized and acceptance will be notified by 15 January 2014. The conference will take place 5-7 June 2014 in the new buildings of Leiden University in the centre of The Hague.

1. The economic crisis and the future of European integration: debates and solutions
The EU is in the midst of an unprecedented economic turmoil which affects not only monetary and macro-economic policies but the legitimacy of the European project as a whole. This section addresses the causes, mechanisms, effects, spillovers and potential solutions to the crisis, as well as the implications of the crisis for individual member states and for European integration.

2. Democracy, parties, citizens and interest representation in the EU
This section focuses on democracy and representation in the EU broadly conceived. It invites panels and papers that deal with constitutional developments, legitimacy, norms and rights in the EU, electoral politics, the role of political parties, the relationship between parties and voters, and citizen attitudes to issues of European integration, as well as with lobbying and interest mobilization in the EU.

3. EU Institutions: the new balance
The EU institutions are still coming to grips with the effects of the Eastern Enlargement and the reforms introduced with the Treaty of Lisbon. This section collects papers that deal with the functioning and transformations of EU institutions, the patterns of inter-institutional conflict and cooperation, and the evolving balance of power.

4. Governance, innovation and regulation in the EU
This section focuses on the theoretical and empirical analysis of the new forms and tools of governance born in response to the crisis, as well as other innovative forms of governance in the EU, patterns of regulatory policy making, coordination, networks in policy making, administrative and management innovations.

5. Policy making and implementation: sectors and actors
This section deals with policy making in traditional sectors of EU activities, including but not restricted to internal market, social policy, environment, migration, consumer protection, etc. The section covers the process of development of EU policies as well as the analysis of the implementation, enforcement, and impact of the rules at the national level.

6. Foreign and security policy, external relations and external governance
Despite the intensive development of organizational structures, the European Union continues facing serious challenges in the international arena: from the responses to changes in Northern Africa to issues of energy security and relations with neighbours and new rising powers. Internally, institutional innovations such as the External Action Service need to be evaluated in terms of their ability to perform their envisaged functions. This section welcomes papers and panels touching on the whole spectrum of themes relevant for foreign policy, security and external action.

7. New methods, models, and approaches in EU studies
The study of European integration is rooted in diverse academic traditions and exhibits wide varieties of research philosophies and methodologies. This section collects papers that bring innovative methods, models, and approaches to the study of the EU, including but not restricted to experimental methods, statistical tools for causal inference, formal models, agent-based simulation, and other approaches that push the boundary of EU research.
