JEAN MONNET SUMMER SCHOOL ON THE EUROPEAN UNION’S AREA OF FREEDOM, SECURITY AND JUSTICE

We are now inviting applications for the Jean Monnet Summer School on the European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, which will take place on 9-15 June 2014 at the University of Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.
ABOUT THE SUMMER SCHOOL
The Jean Monnet Summer School is organised with the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) of the European Union. It offers an intensive, interactive and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the most complex and fast-growing policy area in the EU: the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) (formerly ‘Justice and Home Affairs’).
It examines the latest empirical developments and theoretical approaches, in addition to featuring research methods and general doctoral training sessions. In addition, all participants will present their research project and will receive constructive feedback on it. They will also be encouraged to contribute to the two main publications related to the Summer School on the basis of their PhD project.
The Summer School is intended for students of any discipline writing (or about to start writing) a PhD thesis on any aspect of the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice.
It is organised by Dr Sarah Léonard and Prof. Christian Kaunert.

– Mr Emilio De Capitani (FREE (Fundamental Rights European Experts) Group, formerly at the European Parliament)
– Prof. John Occhipinti (Canisius College)
– Prof. Theodora Kostakopoulou (University of Warwick)
– Dr Javier Argomaniz (University of St Andrews)
– Dr Alex MacKenzie (University of Liverpool)
– Dr Olga Potemkina (Russian Academy of Sciences)
– Mr Tony Bunyan (Statewatch).
ACCREDITATION
Successful participation in the Summer School will be fully accredited (10 ECTS or equivalent).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should:
– be working on a research project related to the European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice;
– be registered on a PhD programme or aspire to be registered on a PhD programme in the near future;
– be proficient in English.
In addition, all participants will be required to write an 8,000-word research proposal and circulate it to all the other participants ahead of the Summer School.

JEAN MONNET CONFERENCE ON ‘THE EU’S AFSJ: STOCKHOLM AND BEYOND’, 16-17 JUNE 2014
The 2014 edition of the Jean Monnet Summer School on the EU’s AFSJ (9-15 June) will be directly followed by the Jean Monnet Conference on ‘The European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice: Stockholm and Beyond’, which will take place at the University of Dundee on 16-17 June 2014.
This interdisciplinary conference will be the inaugural conference of the AFSJ Interest Section of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA), which was launched last year by Professor John D. Occhipinti and Professor Christian Kaunert.
